Hundreds of thousands of people are homeless. Bare essentials such as running water and food are scarce, and up to the last few days were not available. By using sites such as eBay, government officials can more quickly start the rebuilding process.
Now that government agencies have moved in along with relief organizations such as the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and America’s Second Harvest, basic needs are starting to be filled.
The immediate threat of starvation is now being deal with thanks to the outpouring of aid and donations from thousands of corporations, non profit groups, and ordinary citizens.
While the immediate needs of hurricane Katrina survivors are starting to be met, the next step will be to start the rebuilding process.
The cost to rebuild New Orleans, along with the surrounding Gulf Coast, will easily run over a billion dollars according to most media estimates. This estimated cost does not include the time spent sourcing, ordering, and delivering items such as telephones, refrigerators, microwaves, and other necessities.
While this challenge can be tackled through time consuming bureaucratic processes such as setting up contracts for bidders, a process which can take weeks if not months, there is another alternative.
“There are millions of essential items being offered for sale on eBay. The majority of these items are being sold at below their original cost,” said Donny Lowy, of www.ebaybusinessbook.com
Donny Lowy went on to explain that if local and state governments are given permission to buy needed products on eBay, not only will they save millions of dollars, but they will also be able to obtain what survivors need in a much shorter period of time.
While this idea might seem odd at first, there does seem to be a solid foundation to it. eBay is already being used by hundreds of thousands of people to buy equipment, cars, electronics, and clothing. Therefore, what Donny suggests is that government officials should use this online market to secure many of the items that hurricane Katrina survivors will need.
“Hurricane Katrina survivors first need to be supplied with basic essentials such as food, water, clothing, and a warm place to sleep. Next, the government should rapidly start working towards rebuilding their lives. One of the best methods for accomplishing this is to start buying clothing for them. What better way to do this than by using a business market such as eBay?” added Donny Lowy, who is also the CEO of www.closeoutexplosion.com, an online wholesale business.
The Internet has shown that it is a multifaceted tool. On one hand it has proven to be a great communication tool which can be used to supply up to date information to those in need. The web sites of the National Hurricane Center and the Weather Channel have effectively shown this.
Another benefit of the Internet has been its ability to connect buyers with sellers, and users with suppliers. The business model of eBay has been base don taking advantage of this aspect of the Internet. Now that there are hundreds of thousands of people in desperate need, it is time for the government to fully utilize the resources available online.
Donny Lowy, the author of Selling Online: Beyond eBay, and the publisher of www.wholesalecloseoutforum.com, believes that “In order to fully recover from this catastrophe we need to use every tool and resource at our disposal, especially the power of the Internet.”
